Drama Unfolds as 11 Councillors Suspend LGA Chairman Indefinitely in Ondo – Citizens Protest

The Chairman of Owo Local Government Area in Ondo State, Hon. Tope Omolayo, has been suspended indefinitely amid allegations of financial mismanagement and gross misconduct.

However, many citizens have resorted to protests, believing his suspension stems from his protest against perceived attempts to undermine the Supreme Court’s ruling on Local Government Autonomy, citing a leaked conversation between him and a third party as evidence.

The suspension was announced on Wednesday during a plenary session of the Owo Local Government Legislative Council, with the decision supported by 11 councillors under the leadership of House Leader Doyin Adebayo.

In a resolution passed by a two-thirds majority, the council indicated that the action was taken to foster accountability and transparency within local governance.

The resolution outlined several accusations against Omolayo, including the misuse of council funds, violations of budgetary and internal revenue regulations, disrespect towards traditional rulers, and behavior considered unbefitting of his position. The council emphasized that these allegations will be thoroughly investigated.

“The allegations against Hon. Omolayo are serious and will undergo a fair and transparent inquiry,” the statement affirmed.

In the wake of the suspension, the council appointed Vice Chairman Hamed Ibrahim as Acting Chairman until the investigation concludes. The Head of Local Government Administration (HLGA) was tasked with updating administrative records to reflect Ibrahim’s new responsibilities, including modifying authorized bank signatories.

Omolayo has been instructed to promptly return all council properties in his possession to the HLGA.

The Legislative Council has urged Owo residents to maintain peace and patience as the investigation unfolds, reaffirming its commitment to good governance and due process.
