The Osun State Government has officially appointed Nigerian music superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as Chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund, in a strategic move to boost sports development across the state.The announcement was made by Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, during a courtesy visit from the Osun chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) on October 22nd, 2025.
The Sports Trust Fund initiative aims to raise funds and attract investments to transform Osun’s sporting landscape through partnerships between the private and public sectors. Adewusi emphasized that Davido accepted the appointment without hesitation and expressed confidence that the singer’s global influence and extensive network would attract substantial private-sector support and international attention to Osun sports.In addition to the Trust Fund, the government is advancing plans to establish the Osun State Sports Commission, which will serve as the central body for sports administration, development, and policy implementation. These initiatives align with Governor Ademola Adeleke’s broader vision to reposition Osun as a leader in sports development.
Complementing these efforts, the government is fast-tracking the renovation and rehabilitation of the Osogbo Township Stadium to meet Olympic standards. Adewusi assured that the facility upgrade would be completed soon and will be capable of hosting national and international sports competitions, thereby elevating Osun’s status on the sporting map.
While the appointment of Davido, Governor Adeleke’s nephew, has generated mixed reactions, the government remains committed to fostering a sustainable sports financing model that benefits athletes and sports enthusiasts within the state.This move marks a significant step in the state’s ambition to create a world-class sporting environment that supports talent development and attracts global sporting events.
