The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the commencement of an investigation into allegations of bribery and abuse of office leveled against Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Emmanuel Aina.
The probe follows a protest staged at the PSC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, by members of the Centre for Human Rights and Advocacy in Africa Network (CHRAAN), who accused the senior police officer of corruption and misconduct.
The protesters, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, called on the Commission to conduct a thorough investigation, alleging that AIG Aina had solicited and received bribes from police officers and private individuals in exchange for favorable postings and promotions within the Nigeria Police Force. They further claimed that he used his position to intimidate subordinates and obstruct internal investigations.
In a statement, the PSC assured the public that it would “look into the complaints and ensure that justice is served to both parties.” The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability in the Police Force, urging Nigerians to support its reform efforts.
“The Commission insists that it will continue to hold the Police accountable for its actions and inactions but enjoins Nigerians to also give the Police the required support and cooperation to give off its best,” the statement read.
The PSC also disclosed that it has established a whistle-blowing policy designed to promote public participation and transparency in its oversight functions.
CHRAAN, a civil society organization known for its advocacy for police reform and anti-corruption campaigns, stated that its petition to the Commission included documented evidence of AIG Aina’s alleged misconduct. The group urged the PSC to act promptly to restore public confidence in the policing system.
The outcome of the Commission’s investigation is expected to determine further disciplinary or legal actions against the officer if found culpable.
