The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has reiterated that the activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, remains on the police wanted list, affirming that all lawful means will be employed to ensure his arrest.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Wednesday, CP Jimoh stated that the declaration issued earlier in the week against Sowore was still valid. He alleged that Sowore was wanted for offences relating to disturbance of public peace and acts likely to constitute a serious felony, following alleged plans to obstruct traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge.
“My declaration that Sowore is wanted is still in force,” Jimoh said, stressing that the activist had not reported to the police despite previous communication from his legal representatives.
According to the police chief, Sowore’s lawyer had reached out to him via text message on Monday while he was handling a riot situation. The message was reportedly forwarded to the Force’s Legal Department for necessary action.
“They agreed that Sowore will appear at the CID where the investigation is being conducted. The normal practice is to conclude inquiries before making an arrest,” Jimoh explained.
However, he added that Sowore failed to honour the agreement or present himself for questioning.
“Throughout yesterday, he has failed to report, and we will do everything within the ambit of the law to get him arrested, investigated, and prosecuted for these offences,” the Commissioner concluded.
The declaration has sparked reactions from civil rights observers, who insist that the police must act in strict compliance with constitutional safeguards while addressing the case.
