A tragic accident at the Dogon Karfe level crossing in Jos, Plateau State, has left two people dead and two others injured after a train collided with a commercial tricycle, commonly known as keke NAPEP.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Jos Station, Adamu Abdullahi, the incident occurred on Tuesday when the tricycle operator attempted to outrun an oncoming train returning from Bukuru Station, despite repeated warnings from railway personnel stationed at the crossing.
“Our train was coming back from Bukuru to Jos when a tricycle operator, who was impatient, tried to cross the track before the train passed. Unfortunately, the train collided with it,” Abdullahi said.
He confirmed that two victims—the tricycle operator and a male passenger—died instantly, while two female passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The NRC spokesman emphasized that officials are routinely deployed at level crossings to control movement and warn motorists, but the reckless disregard for safety instructions by some operators continues to result in avoidable fatalities.
Authorities have since appealed to road users to exercise patience and obey safety regulations at all railway crossings across the country.
“This incident is another reminder that no trip is worth a life. Drivers must respect railway barriers, signals, and the instructions of safety personnel,” Abdullahi cautioned.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation has launched an internal review of the incident and reiterated its commitment to strengthening safety measures along rail corridors nationwide.
