The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a surprising victory over the Labour Party (LP) in the polling unit of Peter Obi, the LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, during the 2025 Anambra State governorship election. The results declared at Polling Unit 019, Umudimakasi, Amatutu village, Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area, showed APC candidate Nicholas Ukachukwu securing 73 votes, defeating LP’s George Moghalu, who scored 57 votes. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) came third with 38 votes, while other parties recorded minimal votes.
Peter Obi, who also voted at this polling unit, expressed concerns about the prevalence of vote buying, lamenting that “bad governance is fuelling vote buying and selling.” He highlighted that votes were reportedly being traded for amounts ranging from N15,000 to N30,000. Despite Obi’s strong political roots and the expectation that LP would dominate the area, APC’s consistent lead across multiple polling units in Amatutu suggested a shift in voter sentiment, aided by APC’s governorship running mate, Senator Uche Ekwunife, who hails from the area.
Additional results from other polling units in Amatutu further reflected APC’s dominance. At Polling Unit 015, at Amatutu Village Hall, APC won convincingly with 117 votes, far ahead of APGA’s 29 and LP’s 10 votes. Likewise, at Polling Unit 023, located at the Model Primary Health Care Centre in Agulu, APC topped with 25 votes, followed by APGA’s 8 and LP’s 7 votes. The youth and other minor parties captured only a handful of votes.
Ukachukwu also won his polling unit at Umudiala village, Osumenyi, Nnewi South Local Government Area, where APC recorded 108 votes over APGA’s incumbent governor Charles Soludo, who managed only four votes. The voting took place amid observations of widespread vote buying and a relatively low turnout across the state. Anambra has over 2.8 million registered voters, with a significant proportion being students, traders, and businesspeople.
The results have drawn the attention of political observers as they indicate possible realignments in Anambra politics with APC making inroads into traditional strongholds of LP and APGA. The governorship election remains highly contested as parties bid to govern the state for the next four years.
