Tragedy struck at Soun High School, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, as a teacher, Mr. Fatai Adegoke, was reportedly beaten to death by his students after he attempted to stop them from gambling during school hours.
According to eyewitness accounts, Mr. Adegoke confronted a group of students found gambling within the school premises. The confrontation quickly escalated as the students allegedly descended on him with violence, inflicting grievous injuries that left his limbs broken.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention but later succumbed to the injuries sustained in the brutal attack.
A coalition of educators, expressing anger and sorrow over the incident, issued a statement condemning the act as both a moral tragedy and an attack on the integrity of the teaching profession.
“With deep pain and righteous indignation, we mourn the tragic and avoidable death of Mr. Fatai Adegoke, a dedicated teacher who was brutally attacked by his own students while trying to stop them from gambling during school hours,” the statement read.
“This horrifying act is not just an assault on one man — it is an attack on the entire teaching profession.”
The group called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), and law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served by identifying and prosecuting the students responsible. They further urged that parents of the perpetrators be held accountable, emphasizing that discipline begins at home.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the education community, with calls for urgent reforms to address what many describe as rising indiscipline, moral decay, and lack of respect for authority among students.
