A tense and highly charged confrontation erupted on Tuesday, November 11th, 2025, in Abuja between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and military personnel guarding a disputed land site. The incident has raised significant concerns regarding the involvement of armed forces in civil land disputes and the enforcement of development controls within the federal capital.
The clash occurred when soldiers positioned at an estate land site blocked Minister Wike and officials of the FCT Administration (FCTA) from accessing the land. According to witnesses and video footage that circulated online, the soldiers refused to let the minister’s convoy proceed, sparking a heated verbal exchange between Wike and a soldier.
Wike, visibly frustrated, accused the soldier of obstructing government officials from executing their lawful duties related to controlling illegal land acquisitions and building activities. The soldier insisted that they were acting on orders and maintained the legality of the land acquisition, leading to a sharp back-and-forth.
In the heated dialogue captured on video, Wike told the soldier, “Because you’re an officer, nobody does that (nobody acquires land illegally).” The soldier replied, “Sir, everything was acquired legally. Sir, you get the point.” Wike then shouted, “Will you stop that? Shut up!” to which the soldier defiantly responded, “I’m an officer, I have integrity… I won’t shut up.”
The minister went further, calling the soldier “a big fool,” but the officer stood his ground, insisting he was acting on orders and that he was not a fool. The encounter caused quite a stir among bystanders, FCTA officials, and residents nearby.
The land dispute reportedly involves a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo. According to Lere Olayinka, senior special assistant to Minister Wike, former Naval Chief Gambo ignored official warnings to halt construction, lacking both a title document and approved building permits. Olayinka alleged that Gambo deployed armed military security personnel to guard the unauthorized construction, even threatening to shoot anyone who interfered.
Minister Wike personally visited the contested site following a call with the Chief of Defence Staff, further intensifying the situation. The presence of armed military personnel in what is fundamentally a civil urban planning and land management issue has sparked debate on military involvement in governance and land administration in the Federal Capital Territory.
This incident is part of an ongoing effort by the FCT Administration under Wike’s leadership to clamp down on illegal land allocations, encroachments, and unapproved building activities in Abuja. Wike has been outspoken about restoring order to the city’s urban planning and preventing powerful interests from abusing government lands.
However, the minister has also faced criticism over allegations of favoritism and allocation of prime land to associates, allegations he denies vehemently.
As of now, there has been no official response from the Nigerian Army or the Federal Capital Territory Administration regarding the clash or how the land dispute will be resolved.
