The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a deadly ambush on a Nigerian Army convoy, leaving several soldiers dead and reportedly kidnapping a senior military general in Borno State. The assailants, who are affiliated with the Boko Haram splinter group, struck in the tense region where security challenges continue to intensify.
According to multiple sources within the military, the ambush occurred late Friday night as the Army convoy traversed a notorious stretch within Damboa Local Government Area. “We have confirmed that our soldiers encountered challenges in operations in the area,” said Major Edward Buba, a spokesperson for the Nigerian military, in a statement to the press. He further disclosed that, “An investigation has been initiated to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the event,” adding that more comprehensive details would be communicated as soon as the inquiry is concluded.
The eyewitness accounts from security personnel and local residents indicate that the ISWAP fighters unleashed heavy gunfire, quickly overwhelming the soldiers and setting military vehicles ablaze.
