The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new turn on Friday as the Kebbi State chapter formally announced its withdrawal from the party’s national convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a statement issued by the State Publicity Secretary, Sani Dododo, the chapter declared that it would not legitimise a convention process that includes the candidacy of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, whom it describes as “not in good standing with the party.”
Suspension Issues Resurface
The Kebbi PDP reiterated that Turaki was suspended in April 2023 by the Nasarawa 1 Ward for alleged gross misconduct, anti-party activities, and unpaid dues, a disciplinary action which, according to them, has not been vacated.
Seven other members—including former gubernatorial candidate Gen. Bello Sarkin Yaki (rtd.)—were similarly sanctioned.
The chapter insists that the unresolved suspension legally disqualifies Turaki from presenting himself for any national office, including the position of National Chairman.
Petition Ahead of the Convention
In a petition dated October 25, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the Convention Screening Committee, Kebbi PDP leaders formally rejected Turaki’s nomination. The document, signed by Chairman Usman Bello Suru and Secretary Abubakar Bawa Kalgo, was supported by signatures and phone numbers of both working and non-working committee members who unanimously objected to Turaki’s clearance.
Delegates Ordered to Stay Back
The chapter further warned that any individual claiming to represent Kebbi State at the convention would be acting without authority, stressing that all valid delegates have been instructed to remain at home in protest.
Convention to Hold Despite Boycott
Despite the boycott and concerns raised from other zones over procedural irregularities, the PDP national convention is still expected to proceed, with stakeholders across the country preparing to attend.
The development deepens the ongoing disputes over internal party discipline, leadership legitimacy, and adherence to constitutional procedures—concerns that political analysts say may shape future legal challenges within the party.
