The internal crisis engulfing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened over the weekend as Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State outrightly rejected the move to suspend former Governor Nyesom Wike from the party. The suspension, which ignited heated arguments within PDP ranks, has underscored the challenge in resolving ongoing leadership tussles and bridging divisions between prominent party stakeholders.
Governor Fintiri condemned the action, stating, “I do not support the suspension of Wike, and I do not believe it is the way to strengthen our party. Instead, it will only fuel further division and resentment among our members.” He continued, “What we need at this critical time is genuine reconciliation and dialogue — not exclusion.”
Sources within the PDP revealed that several party stalwarts have voiced strong opposition to the suspension, viewing it as a heavy-handed move that could threaten the fragile unity within the party. “Trying to suspend a key member in the South-South on the eve of crucial elections is politically reckless,” said an anonymous party official.
Therefore, Fintiri called for calm, appealing to members to focus on consensus-building. “We must remember that our common aim is to defeat the opposition and rebuild Nigeria. Any action contrary to this objective is a distraction,” he asserted.
The crisis escalated after recent accusations against Wike for alleged anti-party activities, but Fintiri insisted that due process and fairness must prevail. “Let us observe civility and the rule of law. The party must conduct its affairs with transparency and respect for all members,” the governor advised.
As the PDP braces for upcoming electoral contests, observers warn that unresolved internal strife could pose significant risks to its chances. The adamant position taken by Governor Fintiri further highlights a deepening rift, prompting fresh calls for urgent peace efforts within the party leadership.
