Abubakar Malami, the former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation under President Muhammadu Buhari, has formally declared his intention to contest the governorship of Kebbi State in the 2027 elections.
Malami, who announced his decision on Monday, stated, “I have agreed to contest,” emphasizing that his move was in response to persistent calls from the people of Kebbi. “The calls have come from different quarters and key stakeholders, and after wide consultations, I have decided to heed the voices of our people,” Malami said at his declaration.
He highlighted his commitment to inclusive development, improved justice delivery, and deepening democratic governance in the state.During the event, Malami reflected on his service as Nigeria’s longest-serving Attorney General, noting, “I have been privileged to serve the country in one of its most sensitive offices, and I believe the experiences gained will serve Kebbi State well.” He added, “As Attorney General, we worked on reforms to strengthen justice for all, and we recovered significant assets for national development. Now, I am ready to focus that dedication and commitment on Kebbi State.”
Malami, who previously contested the governorship ticket in 2014 but stepped down for Atiku Bagudu, returns to the political fray amidst growing support from youth groups, professional associations, and party leaders. He declared, “If given the mandate, I will ensure that the interests of all communities in Kebbi are addressed—with a special focus on youth empowerment, agricultural innovation, job creation, and security.”
On critics questioning his decision, Malami was direct: “Leadership is about service, and the ultimate decision rests with the people. I welcome scrutiny, and only transparency and public engagement can strengthen our democracy.”
The former Minister’s declaration sets the stage for a keen contest in Kebbi’s 2027 governorship race, as political stakeholders and observers weigh his significant national experience and local roots. Malami’s announcement has already sparked discussion across Kebbi’s political circles, with some hailing his bold step and others calling for fresh faces in state leadership.
Malami remains clear in his resolve: “I am not embarking on this journey for personal ambition, but as a response to the genuine wishes of our people and the enduring hope for a better, prosperous Kebbi State.”
