The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has confirmed that between 600,000 and 700,000 electricity meters are currently available for nationwide deployment. The disclosure was made in Abuja by NERC Vice Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, during the 4th NESI Stakeholders’ Meeting, which also marks his final appearance at the forum in that role.
Dr. Oseni criticised Distribution Companies (DisCos) for slow rollout and inadequate public awareness, noting that the Federal Government has already invested significantly in procuring the meters. He urged the utilities to accelerate distribution and improve communication with consumers, emphasising that the meters are already in-country and awaiting deployment.
Addressing operators and regulators, Dr. Oseni reflected on what he described as “crossroads” facing the electricity sector, particularly with the ongoing transition that empowers newly established State Electricity Regulatory Commissions. He warned DisCos to ensure full cooperation with these state-level regulators, stressing that no operator is above regulatory authority.
He also corrected recent media misinformation concerning the tenure of NERC Commissioners. According to him, the “Staggering Principle” applied only to the pioneer Commission under the Electricity Power Sector Reform Act, while the current Electricity Act provides a uniform five-year tenure for the Chairman and all Commissioners as stated in Section 36(1)
