President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday formally inaugurated the newly appointed Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf, together with two commissioners of the agency and five Federal Permanent Secretaries, in a ceremony held moments before the week’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting convened at the State House, Abuja.
Arriving at the Council Chamber shortly after 1:30 p.m., the President oversaw the swearing-in procedure following the reading of official citations. The new permanent secretaries—Abdulkarim Ibrahim, Dr. John Ezeamama, Dr. Abdul-Sule Garba, Dr. Isiaku Mohammed, and Dr. Ukaire Chigbowu—took their oaths and signed their registers shortly before 1:45 p.m.
Dr. Yusuf, whose appointment as NPC Chairman was confirmed on October 9, was sworn in along with Dr. Tonga Betara of Yobe State and another commission member. With this, the President reinforced the administration’s push to strengthen institutions responsible for national data, demographic analysis, and population management—critical tools for development planning and policy execution.
During the meeting, the council also paused to observe a minute of silence in honour of Ambassador Joy Ogwu, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, who passed away on October 13 at the age of 79. Wednesday’s sitting marked the eighth FEC meeting of the year.
The NPC remains central to Nigeria’s efforts to deliver credible population data, including census oversight and vital registration systems—areas the administration has repeatedly emphasized as essential for accurate budgeting, infrastructure planning, and social programmes.
