Eleven people, including a three-year-old child, lost their lives in a brutal mass shooting at an illegal shebeen inside a hostel in Saulsville township, west of Pretoria, South Africa, early Saturday morning. Police confirmed the attack unfolded around 04:30 local time (02:30 GMT), when at least three armed gunmen stormed the premises where a group was drinking and opened fire indiscriminately.
Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, South African Police Service (SAPS) national spokesperson, detailed the horror to journalists: “At least three unknown gunmen entered this hostel where a group of people were drinking, and they started randomly shooting.”
Among the dead were minors—a three-year-old child, a 12-year-old boy, and a 16-year-old girl—alongside eight adults, with ten fatalities at the scene and one more in hospital.
Mathe emphasized the role of unlicensed venues, stating, “We are having a serious challenge when it comes to these illegal and unlicensed liquor premises… Innocent people also get caught up in the crossfire.”
No arrests have been made, and the motive remains unclear as investigators comb the scene for clues. SAPS has deployed forensic teams, ballistics experts, and the Serious and Violent Crime Unit to track the perpetrators, with a manhunt underway for the suspects. The incident, reported around 06:00 after a delay in notification, underscores South Africa’s raging gun violence crisis, fueled by illegal firearms and gang activity.
