The Edo State Police Command has issued a firm warning to residents, prohibiting the sale, purchase, and use of fireworks, including popular items like “bangers” and “knockouts,” during the ongoing festive season.
In a statement released on Sunday in Benin, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, highlighted a troubling rise in fireworks usage across the state, which has heightened security risks at a time when law enforcement remains on high alert. He emphasized that these explosives disrupt public peace and pose significant dangers. “The loud and sudden explosions from these items are capable of creating unnecessary panic, causing fear in the minds of the public, and potentially leading to false security alerts or avoidable emergencies,” Yamu said.
Yamu reiterated that fireworks are illegal under existing laws and constitute a public nuisance. He issued a stern caution to violators, stating, “For the avoidance of doubt, the use of fireworks constitutes a nuisance and is prohibited under relevant laws. Anyone found selling, purchasing, or using bangers will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.”
The police spokesperson called on parents, guardians, and traders to play key roles in compliance. Yamu urged parents and guardians to caution their children while warning traders against stocking the banned items.
To enforce the ban, the command plans to ramp up surveillance throughout communities. “The command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents throughout the festive season and beyond,” Yamu assured.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities involving fireworks sales or use, with police control room hotlines available for emergencies or tips. These measures form part of broader efforts to prevent security breaches and maintain peace during the holiday period.
