The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Atlanta has issued a security alert warning current and former U.S. government employees about fraudulent job offers allegedly used by Chinese intelligence services to collect sensitive information.
According to the FBI, operatives posing as recruiters on professional networking and hiring platforms are offering enticing positions to individuals with government experience. The goal is to extract sensitive or classified information under the guise of legitimate employment discussions.
The agency highlighted several warning signs of these scams, including:
Excessive flattery or knowledge of personal and professional details
Offers to cover visas, travel, accommodation, or meals
Communication via personal emails or encrypted messaging platforms instead of official channels
Absence of a verifiable online presence for the supposed recruiter
“These malicious actors may offer unusually high salaries and flexible working hours to lure targets,” the FBI said. “If a job sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
The Bureau urged employees to remain vigilant and report any suspicious recruitment attempts to the FBI immediately. This alert comes amid growing concerns about cyber-espionage and intelligence-gathering targeting U.S. institutions through online platforms.
