Nigerian music executive and Mavin Records boss, Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, has criticised social media users who attacked a young woman, Itohan Olat, following his private donation to support her humanitarian initiative.
The backlash began after Itohan, known on X as @itohan_olat, publicly expressed a Christmas wish that Don Jazzy would ask how he could help her. Don Jazzy responded by asking what she needed, after which she listed requests that included clearing personal debts and launching a foundation to support kidney patients with dialysis bills.
Her requests sparked widespread criticism online, with some users accusing her of greed and alleged fraud. As the attacks intensified, Don Jazzy stepped in to defend her, insisting that she had done nothing wrong.
Responding to critics, Don Jazzy said he simply chose to help someone who expressed a desire to also help others. He explained that he reached out privately to shield her from online harassment and to avoid raising expectations without following through.
“She doesn’t owe anyone an explanation. Is she a government official?” he asked, dismissing claims that his generosity was misplaced.
Don Jazzy also addressed accusations that he only supports women, referencing his earlier ₦20 million donation to the Tech Access Project, an initiative aimed at providing laptops to young Nigerians. He noted that beneficiaries of his donations often face criticism regardless of intent.
He further criticised the culture of entitlement surrounding philanthropy, explaining that it is impossible to meet everyone’s needs. “Unfortunately, I can’t help everybody,” he said, adding that this pressure is one reason he does not operate a personal NGO.
Following the controversy, Don Jazzy made a substantial private donation to Itohan. Although the exact amount was not disclosed, she later shared evidence of transactions and began disbursing funds to assist dialysis patients in Abuja.
So far, at least ₦350,000 has been paid directly to hospitals to support two patients undergoing kidney treatment. Both beneficiaries publicly expressed gratitude to Don Jazzy.
Itohan also thanked the music executive for his support, stating that the funds are being used transparently to help patients in need.
Meanwhile, the organiser of the Tech Access Project revealed that he, too, has faced intense online attacks despite accountability efforts, describing the experience as emotionally draining but saying encouragement from Don Jazzy and beneficiaries has kept him going.
