On Friday, 19th, December, 2025, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has taken decisive action to protect the land belonging to Northwest University, Kano, declaring that all illegal allocations and encroachments on the institution’s property will be revoked with immediate effect. The announcement was made during the state’s 35th Executive Council meeting in Kano.
Governor Yusuf issued the directive while receiving members of the university’s Governing Council and management, who were on a courtesy visit to formally present Prof. Amina Bayero as the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, the first woman to hold the position in the university’s history.
In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, the governor expressed concern over illegal land deals involving the institution’s reserve land allegedly carried out under the previous administration. He called on the Commissioner for Land and Physical Planning to immediately undertake a comprehensive assessment of the university’s land holdings and revoke all unauthorized allocations and encroachments identified in the exercise.
“Northwest University must be protected from all forms of land encroachment. Any illegal allocation on its land will be revoked without hesitation,” Governor Yusuf said, underscoring his administration’s commitment to safeguarding public assets.
The governor also used the occasion to direct that all outstanding earned academic allowances owed to the staff of the state-owned institution be fully paid before the end of December, emphasizing that staff welfare is critical to academic stability and morale.
He praised the university’s Governing Council for conducting what he described as a “rigorous and transparent selection process” in appointing Prof. Bayero, congratulating them on “appointing a substantive Vice-Chancellor after a transparent process” that he deemed “critical to the stability and growth of the university.”
Governor Yusuf encouraged Prof. Bayero to leverage her extensive academic experience, urging her to “discharge her responsibilities diligently and work in harmony with all stakeholders to move the institution forward during her five-year tenure.”
In her acceptance remarks, Prof. Amina Bayero expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to lead the university. She outlined a 14-point agenda aimed at strengthening academic standards, improving administrative functionality, and fostering overall institutional growth. “I am fully committed to this responsibility, and my 14-point agenda is focused on strengthening academic standards, administration and the overall growth of the university,” she said.
Earlier, the Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, noted that the selection process for the new Vice-Chancellor had lasted around 10 months, and was unanimously supported by the Governing Council. He added that Prof. Bayero’s appointment had been widely welcomed across the university community.
Governor Yusuf’s move aligns with broader efforts within Kano State to curb unauthorized land dealings and protect public property. His administration has previously warned against illegal sales of government land and properties, signaling a renewed emphasis on upholding land rights and urban planning regulations across the state.
