The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, made an unusual and widely shared public appearance on Friday when he rode an electric scooter to inspect a newly completed road infrastructure project in Delta State, capturing the attention of residents and thousands of Nigerians on social media.
In a video shared on his official Instagram page, the traditional monarch was seen navigating the Trans-Warri–Ode-Itsekiri Road, a key transport link that connects the riverine community of Ode-Itsekiri to other parts of Warri on the two-wheeled device, with his official escort convoy following closely in vehicles behind him.
The post was captioned: “His Majesty inspects the Trans-Warri–Ode-Itsekiri Road, a transformative infrastructure project delivered by the administration of His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.”
This is not the first time the monarch has opted for a scooter in public engagements. In March 2025, he similarly rode a scooter through his ancestral town of Ode-Itsekiri, where enthusiastic residents cheered him on.
Analysts say the episode underscores a broader trend among some public figures to use unconventional but visually striking gestures to draw attention to infrastructure achievements and community ties. Supporters argue such moments help spotlight completed projects and local engagement, while critics question whether they distract from deeper governance issues.
