Award-winning Nigerian singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has attracted online attention after placing a $25,000 wager ahead of the Super Eagles’ opening match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The artiste shared a screenshot of the bet slip on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, indicating a prediction that both Nigeria and Tanzania would score in their Group C encounter. He accompanied the post with a message expressing support for the national team.
The wager carries potential winnings of more than $96,000 and quickly generated reactions from fans and social media users, many of whom praised his confidence in the Super Eagles.
Nigeria will face Tanzania on Tuesday, December 23, with kick-off scheduled for 6:30 p.m., as the team begins its campaign in Morocco. The Super Eagles, three-time AFCON champions, are aiming for a fourth continental title and enter the group stage as favourites, bolstered by a blend of experienced players and attacking talent.
Davido’s post comes shortly after his performance at the AFCON 2025 Kick-Off Concert in Rabat, Morocco. The event, held at the OLM Souissi Fan Zone, was organised to build excitement ahead of the tournament and featured international acts including French Montana, Douaa Lahyaoui and Lartiste.
During his set, Davido performed several of his popular songs, including IF, Fall, Aye and Unavailable, drawing large crowds and adding to the pre-tournament buzz.
The appearance further highlights the growing presence of Nigerian music at major global sporting events. In recent years, Afrobeats artistes have increasingly featured on prominent football stages worldwide.
In June 2023, Burna Boy became the first Nigerian to headline the UEFA Champions League Final Kick-Off Show in Istanbul. Rema followed later that year with a performance at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris, while Tems performed at the FIFA Club World Cup final in New Jersey in July 2025.
Other Nigerian musicians, including Yemi Alade, Femi Kuti, Wizkid, D’banj, Kizz Daniel, Fireboy DML and Patoranking, have also appeared at international sports-related events, reflecting the expanding global influence of Afrobeats.
