Gunmen have abducted 12 Muslim worshippers travelling to attend Maulud prayers in Gaji village, Bashar District of Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The incident reportedly occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, at the Bunyun axis of Wase LGA. The victims were said to be travelling in a vehicle when armed men intercepted them and took them to an unknown location.
A resident of Zak village, who confirmed the incident on Monday, said security agencies later visited the scene as efforts were intensified to rescue the abducted worshippers and track down those responsible.
Police authorities confirmed the abduction, stating that investigations were ongoing. A police source said a team of officers led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Bashar had visited the area and launched a search operation to secure the victims’ release and apprehend the attackers.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama, who also reported the incident, noted that the abduction has renewed concerns over the safety of travellers in Plateau State, recalling previous attacks on commuters in the area.
He referenced past incidents, including deadly attacks on travellers in Mangu and Jos North local government areas, which drew national outrage but remain largely unresolved.
Residents have continued to call for improved security along major routes in the state to prevent further attacks on innocent travellers.
