Yoruba Nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has urgently appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government to intervene following a deadly attack by suspected herdsmen in his hometown of Igboho, located in the Orelope Local Government Area of Oyo State’s Oke-Ogun axis.
In a statement issued on Monday, Igboho raised the alarm over the alleged killing of three local farmers, including; Aderoju Mukaila, Olawuwo Saka, and Ojeniyi Ojebayo, who were attacked after resisting the destruction of their farms by grazing cattle. The victims were reportedly assaulted with dangerous weapons and later died from their injuries despite medical efforts to save them.
Igboho described the incident as part of a broader pattern of insecurity afflicting rural communities in Oyo State and across the South-West region. He stressed that such attacks have become a daily reality for farmers and their families, many of whom are now losing hope amid rising violence.
“On Sunday, three innocent people were killed in my town, Igboho. This is exactly what I have been warning the government about for years. Nothing has changed, and our people continue to suffer attacks while those responsible roam freely,” Igboho said in the statement.
He pointed to the need for urgent government action to protect lives and property, warning that failure to do so could escalate tensions and trigger broader conflict in rural areas.
“The government and relevant security stakeholders must do more to adequately protect lives and property in the Oke-Ogun axis, where insecurity has become a daily reality for residents of Igboho and neighbouring communities,” he added, emphasising the “inimical activities of rogue Fulani herders, bandits, and hoodlums” operating with apparent impunity.
The activist also highlighted that insecurity extends beyond Oyo State, noting similar threats in parts of Kwara and Kogi states, and called for decisive measures from security agencies to curb the menace.
Igboho’s appeal to the president comes amid longstanding tensions between farming communities and herders in Nigeria, where clashes over land use, grazing rights, and livestock routes have periodically erupted into violence. Analysts say these conflicts have contributed to declining agricultural productivity and heightened insecurity in several regions of the country.
In closing, Igboho urged the government to deploy actionable intelligence and proactive security measures, prosecute perpetrators swiftly, and provide the necessary protection to prevent further loss of lives in vulnerable communities.
