President Donald Trump has announced that the US military has carried out airstrikes targeting terrorist hideouts in northwestern Nigeria.
Trump made the disclosure on Christmas Day, describing the operation as the beginning of further military actions against extremist groups operating in the region.
According to him, the strikes targeted ISIS-affiliated terrorists hiding in forest locations in Sokoto State.
Trump recalled that in November 2025, he had expressed concern over the continued killing of Christians in Nigeria’s North-West and North-Central regions, warning that his administration would not tolerate the situation.
He stated that following discussions and coordination with Nigerian authorities, agreements were reached on how to confront the growing terrorist threat.
Subsequently, the US government confirmed that airstrikes were carried out on Thursday night, hitting terrorist camps in the Sokoto forests.
“At my direction as Commander-in-Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS terrorist elements in northwest Nigeria,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.
He added that under his leadership, there would be no safe haven for radical Islamic terrorism.
The development comes amid heightened security concerns following recent attacks in parts of northern Nigeria, including suicide bombings and insurgent activities linked to extremist groups.
