The Ogun State Government has expressed deep sympathy to world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, as well as the families of two British nationals who lost their lives in a tragic road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the state described the incident as painful and unfortunate, noting that it resulted in the loss of lives while leaving others injured.
The accident occurred at the Makun axis of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway as Joshua and three other occupants were travelling from Lagos to Sagamu. Two male British nationals reportedly died at the scene, while Joshua and the driver were rescued by security operatives attached to his convoy and taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Authorities said the identities of the injured and the hospital where Joshua is receiving care have been withheld for security reasons. The remains of the deceased were deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu.
Preliminary findings indicate that the sport utility vehicle conveying the victims collided with a stationary truck on the expressway. The damaged vehicle has been moved to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division office, while arrangements are ongoing to tow the truck involved to aid a full investigation.
The Ogun State Government urged motorists to exercise caution and strictly observe traffic rules, particularly during the festive season when road traffic is heavy. It also called on the Federal Road Safety Corps and other security agencies to intensify monitoring and enforcement to prevent further accidents.
“Our hearts go out to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this tragic incident,” the statement said. “We pray for the peaceful repose of the departed souls and for the speedy recovery of those injured. May God grant the families the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”
