President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed sympathy with heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, following a fatal road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that claimed two lives.
In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, the President described the incident as tragic and extended condolences to the families of the deceased, while wishing Joshua a speedy recovery.
“I extend my heartfelt sympathies following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which resulted in the loss of two lives and left you injured,” Tinubu said, noting that the incident has cast a sombre mood over the festive season.
The President stated that he shared in the grief of Joshua and his family, commending the boxer’s discipline, resilience, and contribution to national pride through sports. He also called on Nigerians to support one another in moments of national tragedy.
Tinubu concluded by offering prayers for Joshua’s recovery and for the repose of the souls of the victims.
The accident reportedly occurred on Monday morning at the Makun axis of Ogun State, along the Ibadan-bound lane of the expressway. Eyewitnesses said the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua collided with a stationary truck near the Danco Filling Station, shortly before the Sagamu Interchange.
A witness, Adeniyi Orojo, disclosed that Joshua sustained minor injuries, while two occupants of the vehicle died at the scene. Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps were said to have arrived promptly, as investigations into the cause of the crash commenced.
