President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mr. Rotimi Iseoluwa Oyedepo, SAN, as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Federal Ministry of Justice.
The approval was confirmed in a statement issued by the State House on Tuesday and signed by Abiodun Oladunjoye, Director of Information and Public Relations. According to the statement, the president authorised Oyedepo’s transfer of service from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the Federal Civil Service.
An official letter dated December 23, signed by Omolabake Mafe on behalf of the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, described the appointment as being made in the public interest.
Oyedepo’s appointment follows the impending retirement of the current DPP, Mr. Abubakar Babadoko, who will complete the mandatory eight-year tenure as a director on December 31, 2025.
A graduate of Law from the University of Ilorin in 2007, Oyedepo was called to the Nigerian Bar after attending the Nigerian Law School in 2008. He is expected to bring his extensive prosecutorial experience to the role, particularly in strengthening government-led prosecutions and reducing reliance on external legal counsel.
Before his elevation, Oyedepo spent over 15 years at the EFCC, where he specialised in prosecuting complex economic and financial crimes. He also served as Head of the agency’s Monitoring Unit.
In addition, he was part of the Federal Government’s legal team in the high-profile international arbitration case between Nigeria and Process and Industrial Development (P&ID), which attracted global attention.
The presidency expressed confidence that Oyedepo’s expertise would enhance coordination and consistency in the Federal Government’s legal strategies.
