Police have arrested the driver of the vehicle involved in the tragic road crash on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that left two of British–Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua’s close associates dead and injured the former heavyweight champion, authorities confirmed on Thursday.
The arrest comes amid an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the Monday, December 29, 2025, accident in the Makun area of Ogun State—a busy stretch of one of Nigeria’s most trafficked highways. Two of Joshua’s companions, later identified as his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, and personal trainer, Latif “Latz” Ayodele, died at the scene, while Joshua and others survived with injuries.
According to law enforcement sources, the chauffeur of the Lexus SUV that was carrying Joshua and the others has been released from hospital custody and formally detained in connection with the crash. CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, a spokesperson for the Nigerian Police Force, confirmed the driver is currently providing a statement as part of the police inquiry.
An official familiar with proceedings said the motorist could face prosecution for reckless driving, a serious offence under Nigerian law when fatalities occur. The driver, who was also injured in the collision, has since been discharged from medical care and is cooperating with investigators.
The incident occurred near a stationary truck parked along the expressway, causing the Lexus to lose control and collide with it. Preliminary reports by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) suggested the SUV was travelling at a speed above the legal limit and lost control while attempting an overtaking manoeuvre, findings that could form part of the basis for criminal charges.
Therefore, an FRSC official also revealed that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the collision and authorities are actively searching for the individual.
The crash has drawn significant attention both locally and internationally, not only because of Joshua’s celebrity status but also due to broader concerns about road safety on major Nigerian highways. Community reactions and voices from public figures have called for urgent improvements in traffic enforcement and highway conditions.
