A man, identified as Igwe Akuma from Ndi Uma compound, was killed on Friday during a violent outbreak in Okon-Aku community, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.
Following the killing, youths in the community reportedly set fire to homes, vehicles, and other property belonging to residents.
The Udumeze of Ohafia, Ezie Ohamoha Awa Orji Udonsi, along with the Ohafia Council of Monarchs, condemned the murder and the resulting destruction in a statement on Saturday. They noted that the victim was planning to get married in the coming days before his untimely death.
The statement read in part:
“The Udumeze condemns in its entirety the gruesome murder of a young Ohafian who was said to be getting married in a few days,” adding that such acts of killing and arson are unacceptable under any circumstances and do not mark a proper start to the new year.
The council also appealed for calm between the Ndi Owom and Ndi Uma compounds and assured that they were working with relevant security agencies to prevent further escalation.
Confirming the incident, DSP Maureen Chinaka, Police Public Relations Officer of Abia State Command, said the DPO of Ohafia Divisional Headquarters led officers to arrest several suspects. Two police tactical teams were dispatched to the community to restore and maintain law and order, and the arrested individuals are currently under interrogation.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident as the community mourns the loss of the young man.
