Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has declared that his political career would be “buried” if Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara secures a second term.
Speaking on Saturday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Okrika Local Government Area, Wike said a decision had already been made regarding Fubara’s re-election. “We have made a decision as far as Tinubu is concerned. The other one [Fubara] — no way. If we make another mistake, we will go and bury ourselves politically. I will not allow that mistake again,” he said.
The FCT minister renewed his attacks on Fubara following the governor’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Wike accused Fubara of breaching the peace agreement that allowed him to return to office after the lifting of emergency rule in Rivers State.
He also hinted that leadership mistakes in Rivers would be corrected in 2027, promising to disclose the details of the agreement that facilitated Fubara’s rise to power. “Leaders are meant to serve the people, not personal interests. We will not repeat the same mistake in 2027,” Wike said.
Addressing Fubara’s support for President Bola Tinubu, Wike insisted that backing Tinubu would not secure Fubara’s re-election. “If you played well with the first one and succeeded, do you think you can succeed with the second one? There cannot be two markets in one day,” he said, referring to previous political arrangements with the governor.
Wike questioned Fubara’s ability to relate with local government chairmen, state assembly, and national assembly members, implying that such disconnect undermines leadership capacity. He also reminded the public that he had supported Fubara despite the governor’s initial lack of popularity among Rivers residents.
