China has asserted that no country should assume the role of the world’s judge in the wake of developments in Venezuela, where President Nicolas Maduro was captured.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the statement on Sunday during a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart, Ishaq Dar, emphasizing that the sovereignty and security of all nations must be fully respected under international law.
“We have never believed that any country can act as the world’s police, nor do we accept that any nation can claim to be the world’s judge,” Wang said.
The comments come after images of Maduro blindfolded and handcuffed surfaced on Saturday, drawing international scrutiny. Maduro is currently detained in a New York facility and is scheduled to appear in U.S. court on Monday to face drug-related charges.
