A federal high court in Abuja has granted bail to former attorney-general of the federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, alongside his wife, Asabe Bashir, and son, Abdulaziz Malami, in the sum of N500 million each.
Delivering the ruling on Wednesday, Justice Emeka Nwite ordered that each defendant must provide two sureties in like sum, who must own landed property within Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarimpa areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The sureties are required to swear to an affidavit of means and submit two passport photographs to the deputy registrar of the court. The defendants must also deposit their international passports with the court and are barred from traveling abroad without permission.
The court adjourned further hearing in the case to February 17, 2026.
Malami, his wife, and son were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges bordering on money laundering amounting to N8.7 billion. All three defendants pleaded not guilty.
The EFCC alleged that the defendants laundered the funds between 2015 and 2025, using multiple bank accounts and corporate fronts—including Metropolitan Auto Tech Limited and Meethaq Hotels Limited—to conceal the source of the money.
According to the charge sheet, the funds were allegedly used to acquire high-value properties in Abuja, Kano, and Kebbi States, and structured in a way to disguise their illicit origin.
The anti-graft agency also claimed that property worth N212 billion had been traced to Malami.
The alleged offences contravene provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, among other related laws.
The defendants were previously remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre on December 30, 2025, pending the court’s ruling on their bail application.
