Nigerian petroleum marketers have announced plans to further reduce the price of premium motor spirit (petrol) to around N739 per litre nationwide, pending the start of direct fuel supply from Dangote Refinery.
The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) said its members are set to receive petrol at N699 per litre from Dangote Refinery starting January 2026. The development was disclosed by IPMAN President Abubakar Maigandi in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST.
Currently, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has pegged petrol prices at N815 per litre at its Abuja retail outlets, amid an ongoing price competition in the country’s downstream sector. Despite the reduction, NNPCL’s price remains N76 higher than Dangote Refinery-supported MRS stations, which sell petrol at N739 per litre.
At the end of 2025, Dangote Refinery announced a significant reduction in petrol prices, sparking a price war among major downstream players into 2026. Across filling stations nationwide, petrol prices currently range between N739 and N900 per litre, showing a wide gap between Dangote-backed stations and other sellers.
Maigandi stated that IPMAN members are prepared to dispense petrol at a maximum price of N750 per litre once Dangote Refinery begins direct deliveries:
“He (Aliko Dangote) promised that direct supply to independent marketers would start this month. Once it begins, without transport costs, petrol will reach filling stations at about N750 per litre. Prices will drop immediately as marketers buy and sell at this rate.”
In December 2025, Dangote Refinery had lowered its gantry price from N838 to N699 per litre and later pegged MRS filling stations at N739 per litre. However, the price reduction has yet to fully reflect across the sector, with some stations still selling petrol at up to N900 per litre in Abuja and other locations.
The development is expected to make cheaper fuel more accessible to Nigerians, reducing the wide price disparity in the downstream petroleum market.
