United States President Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy by boasting that he single-handedly compelled NATO countries to boost their defense spending and prevented Russia from seizing control of Ukraine
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump asserted that before his presidency, most NATO members were neglecting their financial commitments, leaving the United States to bear the burden.
“Remember, for all of those big NATO fans, they were at 2% GDP, and most weren’t paying their bills, UNTIL I CAME ALONG,” he stated. “The USA was, foolishly, paying for them!”
Trump contended that he urged NATO allies to increase defense spending to as high as 5 percent of their Gross Domestic Product, insisting that member states now pay up immediately.
“I, respectfully, got them to 5% GDP, AND THEY PAY, immediately. Everyone said that couldn’t be done, but it could, because, beyond all else, they are all my friends,” he added.
The president also claimed that his involvement was crucial in thwarting a complete Russian takeover of Ukraine.
“Without my involvement, Russia would have ALL OF UKRAINE right now,” Trump stated, failing to provide details to substantiate the assertion.
Trump further alleged that he single-handedly concluded eight wars during his tenure and expressed discontent that Norway, a NATO member, chose not to bestow the Nobel Peace Prize upon him.
“Remember, also, I single-handedly ENDED 8 WARS, and Norway, a NATO Member, foolishly chose not to give me the Noble Peace Prize. But that doesn’t matter!” he remarked.
According to Trump, what genuinely matters is that he saved millions of lives and cautioned that NATO would be ineffective without American leadership.
“What does matter is that I saved Millions of Lives. RUSSIA AND CHINA HAVE ZERO FEAR OF NATO WITHOUT THE UNITED STATES, AND I DOUBT NATO WOULD BE THERE FOR US IF WE REALLY NEEDED THEM,” he expressed.
Trump also took credit for rebuilding the U.S. military during his first term and claimed he continues to do so, arguing that America’s strength under his leadership is the sole force respected by Moscow and Beijing.
“EVERYONE IS LUCKY THAT I REBUILT OUR MILITARY IN MY FIRST TERM, AND CONTINUE TO DO SO. We will always be there for NATO, even if they won’t be there for us. The only Nation that China and Russia fear and respect is the DJT REBUILT U.S.A. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!” he declared.
Trump concluded that, despite his skepticism regarding NATO’s loyalty, the United States under his leadership would consistently support the alliance, even if its allies might not be there for the U.S.
