The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission has set June 6 for the local government council elections across the 17 local government areas of the state.
This announcement was made in Damaturu by a Permanent Member of the commission, Mohammed Nguru, during a stakeholders’ meeting attended by security agencies, political party leaders, and members of the media. He stated that the election timetable has received the approval of Governor Mai Mala Buni.
Nguru explained that the upcoming polls aim to strengthen democratic governance at the grassroots level, emphasizing that credible elections require the collective effort of all stakeholders, including political parties, security agencies, and the media.
He disclosed that the commission would soon release detailed guidelines outlining procedures, timelines, and requirements for political parties, urging full compliance. He added that parties are expected to present credible candidates whose leadership would positively impact service delivery and development at the local level.
According to him, chairmanship candidates must be at least 30 years old, while councillorship aspirants must be at least 25. He further noted that all candidates must be bona fide residents, possess a minimum of a school certificate, undergo security screening, and pay nomination fees set at ₦300,000 for chairmanship, ₦250,000 for vice-chairmanship, and ₦200,000 for councillorship positions. He assured residents that the elections would be free, fair, credible, and peaceful.
