China has reportedly breached the email systems used by staff members of several key committees in the U.S. House of Representatives, according to a report by the Financial Times.
The alleged cyber intrusion is said to be part of a wider espionage operation known as Salt Typhoon, which has raised serious concerns among U.S. cybersecurity officials. Sources familiar with the matter disclosed that the hack affected email systems used by staffers on the House China Committee, as well as aides attached to the Foreign Affairs, Intelligence, and Armed Services Committees.
The report did not indicate whether the personal email accounts of lawmakers themselves were compromised.
U.S. officials have described Salt Typhoon as a significant national security threat, alleging that the hacking group may be positioning itself to disrupt critical American infrastructure in the event of heightened tensions or conflict with China, rather than merely collecting intelligence.
Reuters said it could not independently verify the claims, while the White House had not issued an immediate response to the report at the time of publication.
China has repeatedly denied involvement in cyberattacks against the United States, dismissing such accusations as baseless.
