The newly appointed Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation (DPPF), Rotimi Iseoluwa Oyedepo, SAN, has formally assumed office, pledging to pursue prosecutions grounded strictly in law, evidence and the public interest.
Oyedepo expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Attorney-General of the Federation for the confidence reposed in him, describing his appointment as a call to national service rather than a personal accomplishment.
He said the goodwill, prayers and congratulatory messages he has received since his appointment were humbling and reaffirmed the weight of responsibility attached to the office.
According to him, the role of the DPP comes at a crucial period for Nigeria’s criminal justice system, requiring professionalism, independence and a renewed commitment to constitutional principles.
“This appointment is a solemn call to service. I am committed to strengthening public prosecution in Nigeria to address present challenges and prepare the system for the future,” Oyedepo stated.
The senior advocate acknowledged the support of his mentors, colleagues at the Bar and Bench, law enforcement agencies, civil society organisations, friends and family, noting that their encouragement played a key role in his professional development.
Oyedepo outlined his priorities to include prosecutorial independence, efficiency, integrity and strict adherence to the rule of law. He stressed that prosecutorial decisions under his leadership would be free from external influence and guided solely by legal standards and available evidence.
“Decisions will be based on the law, evidence and the public interest, anchored on fairness, diligence and integrity,” he said.
He also emphasised the importance of collaboration among justice sector stakeholders, noting that effective public prosecution requires cooperation across institutions within and outside government.
Oyedepo expressed optimism that sustained engagement would help build a credible, resilient and forward-looking public prosecution system for Nigeria.
