Afrobeat singer and activist Seun Kuti has criticised fans of popular musician Wizkid over what he described as persistent and disrespectful references to his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, during online music debates.
In a video shared on Instagram on Saturday, Seun warned members of Wizkid’s fan base, known as Wizkid FC, to stop dragging Fela’s name into arguments and comparisons involving contemporary artistes. He said such actions showed ignorance of his father’s legacy and amounted to needless provocation.
According to him, attempts to label any modern artiste as a “new Fela” often collapse because they fail to capture the depth and impact of the late Afrobeat pioneer’s work and ideology. He added that the frequent comparisons eventually turn into insults when fans realise they cannot sustain them.
Seun also blamed toxic fan culture for fuelling unnecessary rivalry in the music industry, arguing that genuine art should inspire reflection rather than constant online battles. He questioned why some fans struggled to enjoy music without comparing it to others, suggesting that the drama reflected dissatisfaction rather than appreciation of the art itself.
Recalling past clashes with Wizkid’s supporters, Seun said he would not back down and insisted that his father’s name should be left out of fan wars. He maintained that Fela’s legacy was not open to debate and deserved respect.
He concluded by urging fans to focus on celebrating music and creativity, stressing that the late Afrobeat icon should be allowed to rest in peace.
