The Rivers State House of Assembly has clarified that the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, is ongoing and has not been suspended.
The proceedings began on Thursday after Majority Leader Major Jack read out charges of gross misconduct against Fubara, signed by 26 members of the assembly. Reports on Friday suggesting that the process had been halted were dismissed by Enemi George, chairman of the house committee on information, petitions, and complaints.
George stated that notices of the allegations had already been forwarded to Fubara and Odu, and the assembly is awaiting their responses. He described the claims of suspension as false narratives aimed at misleading the public and sowing discord.
He called on citizens to disregard such reports, emphasizing that the assembly remains committed to its constitutional duties and will not be swayed by “cheap blackmail or threats” from those opposed to the democratic process.
The assembly reiterated its determination to continue with the impeachment proceedings, asserting that its work is in line with the law and the interests of Rivers State.
