Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described his son Abba Abubakar’s decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a personal choice, stressing that it does not affect his own political stance.
In a statement shared on Thursday via X (formerly Twitter), Atiku said political differences within families are normal in a democratic society and insisted that he does not interfere with the political convictions of his children or any Nigerian.
“The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal. In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect,” Atiku said.
He added that respect for freedom of conscience guides his approach to politics.
“As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians,” he stated.
While acknowledging his son’s decision, Atiku criticised the ruling APC, saying his primary concern remains governance and the welfare of Nigerians.
“What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people,” he said.
The former vice president reaffirmed his commitment to working with like-minded Nigerians to provide an alternative political direction for the country.
“I remain resolute in working with patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that brings relief, hope, and progress,” he added.
Abba Abubakar had earlier announced his defection from the PDP to the APC at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, where he was received by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside other APC leaders from the North-East.
Speaking at the event, Abba described his move as a personal and historic decision and pledged to mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
He cited the leadership of Senator Barau as a key factor in his decision and directed members of his political organisation to join the APC and work for the ruling party ahead of the next general election.
