The Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State Police Command, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, has issued a firm directive to arrest the officers involved in assaulting a tricycle (keke) rider. The footage, which circulated widely on platforms like X and WhatsApp on Friday, showed a middle-aged tricycle operator standing beside his vehicle, visibly distressed, while recounting how some policemen chased him moments earlier. According to the rider, he had explained to the officers that he was unwell and on his way for medical treatment—a plea that seemingly fell on deaf ears.
The video depicted an escalating confrontation: one officer initially confronted a resident who was recording the incident, ordering them to stop filming and insisting that “there was no right to record them.” Moments later, the situation deteriorated as the policemen turned their attention to the tricycle rider.
The rider could be heard pleading with the officers and promising, “bring the money,” as one policeman threatened to punch him and shoved him to the ground.
The footage then showed the officers forcing the rider into a nearby bush, where he was repeatedly beaten, stomped on with boots and struck with a tire before the officers eventually departed the scene. After they left, the injured victim was seen explaining the ordeal to bystanders who had gathered.
A voice off-camera speculated that the altercation may have stemmed from issues relating to the rider’s driver’s licence. The victim also alleged that the policemen removed items from his tricycle, including tyres.
Reacting to the widespread outrage, the police command described the conduct of the officers as “unacceptable and contrary to professional policing standards.” In a statement issued by DSP Musa Mohammed, Police Public Relations Officer for Bayelsa State Command, the action taken against the erring officers was outlined.
“The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor…has condemned the act in strong terms, describing it as unacceptable and contrary to professional policing standards,” the statement read.
The command made clear that it “does not tolerate any form of human rights violation, unprofessional conduct or brutality” by its personnel.
In a decisive move, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor ordered the immediate arrest of the officers captured in the video.
According to the statement, “The officers involved have been arrested and disciplinary proceedings has since commenced in accordance with the provisions of the Police Act and other extant regulations.”
CP Edebor also sought to allay public concerns by reaffirming the command’s commitment to the safety and rights of all citizens.
“CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor reiterates the command’s unwavering commitment to the protection of the rights and safety of all citizens while ensuring lawful and professional policing across Bayelsa State.”
The police urged members of the public to remain calm and continue supporting efforts to maintain peace and order throughout the state as investigations and disciplinary processes continue.
