The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, recognising his extraordinary courage and selflessness in saving the lives of 262 Christians during violent communal clashes in Plateau State in 2018. The tribute, delivered in a statement on Saturday, January 17th, 2026, underscored the late Imam’s legacy as a powerful symbol of interfaith harmony and shared humanity.
Imam Abubakar, who served as the Chief Imam of Nghar Village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, passed away at the age of 92. His death was confirmed earlier this week, prompting expressions of sorrow not only from CAN but also from national and opposition political figures who described him as a “true hero of humanity.”
In its statement, signed by CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association described the late Imam’s actions during the Plateau crisis as a profound example of moral bravery that transcended religious divides.
“The Christian Association of Nigeria pays glowing tribute to an extraordinary religious leader whose life and actions remain a profound testimony to courage, compassion, and our shared humanity,” the statement said.
“The late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi will forever be remembered for his rare moral bravery and selflessness at a time of grave danger.”
CAN highlighted that at the height of the 2018 violence, Imam Abubakar made a conscious and courageous choice to protect innocent lives at great personal risk by sheltering Christians in his mosque and home. The association said that act of bravery stood “firmly on the side of humanity when it mattered most,” affirming “that the sanctity of human life is sacred above all else.”
According to the association, the Imam’s actions did more than save lives; they reinforced hope and strengthened bonds of mutual respect in a nation often challenged by religious and ethnic tensions.
“This singular act of heroism did more than save lives,” CAN said. “It reinforced hope, strengthened interfaith harmony, and reminded our nation that peace is possible when conscience, love, and faith guide our actions.”
CAN also noted that in recognition of his remarkable service to humanity, Imam Abubakar was honoured during the association’s Sapphire Anniversary celebrations in 2021, when he received an award for his role in fostering peace and coexistence among diverse communities.
While plaques and awards may fade with time, CAN stressed, Imam Abubakar’s legacy will endure as a “shining example” for religious leaders, communities, and future generations. The association urged Nigerians to ensure his story of courage and unity continues to inspire efforts toward peaceful coexistence.
“As we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life well lived in service to God and humanity,” the statement concluded, extending heartfelt condolences to his family, community, and all those touched by his remarkable example.
Imam Abubakar’s death has also elicited tributes from other national figures, including President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who praised his unwavering commitment to peace, interfaith respect and the sanctity of human life.
His courageous act in 2018, during an era of deadly communal violence that engulfed several Plateau communities, remains widely cited as an enduring testament to the power of humanity over division.
