Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has been declared winner of the country’s presidential election, securing a seventh term in office after more than 40 years in power.
Official results released by the electoral commission showed that Museveni polled 71.65 per cent of the votes, defeating his closest rival, opposition leader Bobi Wine, who scored 24.72 per cent.
Museveni, 81, has ruled Uganda since 1986 and has overseen constitutional amendments that removed both presidential term limits and age limits, enabling him to remain in office.
The election, held on Thursday, was marked by reports of violence and allegations of widespread irregularities. Authorities also imposed a nationwide internet shutdown ahead of the vote, citing concerns over misinformation.
Uganda’s security agencies confirmed that at least seven people were killed in election-related violence.
Bobi Wine has rejected the results, describing the election as fraudulent. Speaking from an undisclosed location, he said he went into hiding after security operatives allegedly raided his home.
The opposition candidate accused authorities of ballot manipulation and military interference, insisting that the announced results do not reflect the will of Ugandan voters.
