The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on Simeon Amadi, the state’s chief judge, to comply with an interim court order stopping all actions related to the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The party made the appeal after the Rivers State House of Assembly asked the chief judge to constitute a seven-member panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against the governor and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. The lawmakers accused Fubara of disrespecting the legislature and ignoring efforts at reconciliation.
However, a Rivers State High Court, presided over by Justice F. A. Fiberesima, issued an interim injunction restraining the speaker, the clerk of the assembly, and the chief judge from taking any steps toward the impeachment process. The court order bars the chief judge from receiving or acting on impeachment-related documents for seven days, pending the hearing of a motion on notice scheduled for January 23, 2026.
In a statement released in Port Harcourt, Darlington Nwauju, Rivers APC publicity secretary, described the impeachment move as a “choreographed legislative coup d’état” that could damage the party’s unity and future in the state. He warned that the action could embarrass the APC and weaken its standing in Rivers.
Nwauju urged the APC national leadership to intervene using the party’s internal disciplinary mechanisms to prevent the crisis from escalating and to protect the party’s interests in the state.
