Abdulrasheed Maina, the former chairman of the now-defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), has been released from Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja after serving an eight-year prison sentence.
Maina was convicted in November 2021 by a federal high court in Abuja on 12 counts of money laundering, involving more than N2 billion meant for pensioners—many of whom had passed away without receiving their benefits. The court found that Maina concealed his ownership of bank accounts by using the identities of his family members.
He was originally sentenced to a total of 61 years in prison, with the sentences running concurrently from his arraignment on October 25, 2019. Maina appealed the ruling, but the Court of Appeal upheld both his conviction and the eight-year term in May 2023.
Although the exact date of his release is unclear, sources told The Legalobserver that Maina has been free for several weeks.
