The Presidency has reaffirmed its support for Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, insisting that he remains the recognised leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state and should be allowed to govern without obstruction.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Hard Copy, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Communication, Daniel Bwala, said the party’s structure in Rivers State is clear and unambiguous. He noted that the APC national leadership recognises Governor Fubara as the party’s leader in the state, stressing that former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is not a member of the APC and therefore cannot speak for the party.
Bwala explained that while Wike may be regarded as a leader within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State due to his past role as governor, such status does not extend to the ruling party. According to him, the APC stands firmly by its internal processes and the position of its national chairman on the matter.
He further stated that President Bola Tinubu is deeply committed to the rule of law, due process, and democratic principles, adding that the party will always respect established procedures. Bwala said the President’s stance reflects a broader belief that elected governors, regardless of political affiliation, should be allowed to carry out their constitutional responsibilities.
Addressing concerns over Wike’s influence within the Federal Government, Bwala acknowledged that cabinet members may enjoy certain privileges but emphasised that such benefits do not supersede national interest. He warned that while the President gives room for cooperation, boundaries exist and will be enforced when crossed.
On the political tension in Rivers State, Bwala said issues surrounding the relationship between Wike and Governor Fubara are being handled within the framework of the law. He stressed that any impeachment process must strictly follow constitutional provisions, noting that existing court orders have halted such moves against the governor.
He added that the APC’s position is clear that no individual or group should interfere with Governor Fubara’s administration, reaffirming the party’s commitment to constitutional governance, internal discipline, and political stability in Rivers State and across the country.
