The University of Ibadan has been ranked as Nigeria’s leading institution in both law and medicine in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject.
The rankings, obtained from the Times Higher Education website, placed UI and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in the 301–400 band for law, marking Nigeria’s inclusion among 425 top law schools globally. The assessment was based on teaching quality, research output, international outlook, and performance across key areas such as constitutional, criminal, corporate and international law. Stanford University topped the global law ranking.
For medical and health subjects, UI also emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked institution, again in the 301–400 band. The ranking evaluated universities across medicine, dentistry, nursing and related health disciplines using 18 performance indicators. Oxford University led the global list, while over 1,200 universities from 102 countries were assessed.
Within Nigeria, the University of Lagos followed UI in the 401–500 band for medicine and health. Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University, University of Benin, University of Jos and UNN were ranked in the 601–800 range, while Babcock University, Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Ilorin appeared in the 801–1000 category.
