The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newly married woman over the alleged poisoning of her husband, who reportedly died after consuming a meal she prepared.
The incident occurred on Friday, January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 pm in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State. According to police reports, the deceased became critically ill shortly after eating lunch at home and was rushed to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead while receiving treatment.
Confirming the incident in a statement issued in Dutse, the state capital, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, said detectives from the Jahun Division promptly launched an investigation and arrested the deceased’s wife as the prime suspect.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison. She reportedly told investigators that she sent her cousin to purchase the poison used in the act.
The police spokesperson further revealed that the suspect claimed she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she said contributed to her actions.
Meanwhile, the Jigawa State Commissioner of Police has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for a thorough investigation. The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The police have urged members of the public to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving marital and family disputes, warning that taking the law into one’s hands often leads to irreversible consequences. The command reassured residents of its commitment to justice and the protection of lives and property across the state.
