Operatives of the Borno State Police Command have arrested a 22-year-old woman in Maiduguri after intercepting her with 89 sachets of tramadol capsules concealed inside a sack of grounded maize at a major motor park.
According to a statement shared on social media platform X and signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the arrest followed credible intelligence.
Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid said police officers attached to the State Intelligence Department (SID) intercepted the suspect on January 20, 2026, at about 7:30pm at Baga Road Motor Park.
Abdulmajid explained that the woman was stopped during an operation prompted by a tip-off. “The suspect was found in possession of a black sack containing grounded maize (garri-masara), within which were concealed eighty nine (89) sachets of tramadol capsules,” he said in the statement.
Confirming early findings from the investigation, the police boss said the suspect had previously transported drug consignments. He said police inquiries revealed that she was acting on instructions from a relative.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was given the black sack by her uncle to waybill the illicit consignment to Damasak Local Government Area before her interception, and that it was the second time she was carrying out such an assignment,” the statement added.
Officials confirmed that the suspect, along with the recovered exhibits, remain in police custody as detailed investigations continue. Efforts are also underway to apprehend the uncle suspected to be her accomplice.
Abdulmajid reiterated the command’s commitment to combating drug trafficking, substance abuse and other criminal activities within the state. He urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information that could aid security operations and protect communities.
This arrest underscores ongoing law enforcement efforts in Borno State to curb the proliferation of illicit drug trafficking, a challenge that authorities nationwide continue to confront.
