Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has announced that January 23 will be observed as “World Betrayal Day” by the Kwankwasiyya movement.
The declaration came as Kwankwaso addressed his supporters at his residence in Kano following the planned defection of Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano State, from the NNPP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Kwankwaso explained that the decision to mark January 23 arose from discussions on social media about acts of betrayal. Speaking in Hausa, he said, “There was a post suggesting the need to declare January 23 as World Betrayal Day. As the leader of this movement, I now support this, and we will observe it everywhere.”
On January 23, Yusuf formally resigned from the NNPP, the platform under which he was elected governor in 2023. He left the party alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 Local Government Area chairmen in the state.
Yusuf cited “deepening internal crises” and “prolonged leadership disputes” as reasons for his exit. His resignation followed a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, in the days preceding his defection.
Kwankwaso had played a key role in Yusuf’s rise to the governorship in 2023 through the Kwankwasiyya movement. However, recent developments indicated that relations between the two politicians had deteriorated.
